B&O Mountain Subdivision Scenario Pack 02 Released
High Iron Simulations releases ten Career scenarios for Train Simulator Classic, focusing on heavy coal hauls and classic diesel power on the B&O West End.
High Iron Simulations has released B&O Mountain Subdivision Scenario Pack 02 for Train Simulator Classic. The new content adds ten Career scenarios that focus on heavy coal tonnage, classic diesel locomotives, and the demanding grades of the Alleghany Mountains. This update expands the existing B&O Mountain Subdivision route, which covers the 101-mile main line between Cumberland, Maryland, and Grafton, West Virginia, along with more than 30 miles of the Western Maryland Railway’s Thomas Subdivision and the Cumberland Terminal.
The scenarios are set in the pre-Chessie System era, spanning from the early 1960s through the early 1970s. This period is significant for simulation users because it features specific locomotive configurations and operational practices that differ from later eras. The pack is designed to reflect real railroad operations and train symbols closely, providing a historically grounded experience for players interested in mid-20th-century heavy haul.
The Alleghany Coal Sequence
The centerpiece of the pack is the five-part Alleghany Coal sequence. This scenario begins in October 1965 at Grafton, where the player takes charge of an eastbound loaded coal drag. The train is powered by a classic A-B-B-A set of B&O EMD F7s. The journey toward Cumberland requires careful management of the train’s weight and momentum as it navigates the region’s steep terrain.
Throughout the sequence, players must add and remove helper locomotives to manage the train’s performance on specific grades. The route includes climbing Newburg Grade, descending the Cheat River Grade to M&K Junction, and battling Cranberry Grade to Terra Alta. The sequence continues across the Alleghany high plateau and concludes with the descent of Seventeen Mile Grade before the final run from Keyser to Cumberland. These grades, including Newburg, Cheat River, Cranberry, and Seventeen Mile, all present gradients of more than 2 percent. Such steep inclines demand precise throttle and brake control, particularly for the heaviest tonnage, where rear helpers are essential for maintaining speed and safety.
Variety in Operations
Beyond the mainline coal run, the pack offers variety through other operational duties. In the B&O Keyser Turn scenario, players operate a pair of veteran GP7s from Cumberland Terminal toward Keyser. This scenario involves local set-out and pick-up work, requiring attention to station stops and local traffic management. Another scenario, B&O Terra Alta Turn, places the player at the throttle of a GP9 on a wintry local working. This route calls at locations including Mountain Lake Park and Oakland as the train works toward Terra Alta, adding a seasonal visual and operational element to the experience.
The pack also features other classic B&O motive power. The Alleghany Rollercoaster scenario utilizes a set of EMD SD35s on a westbound train of empty hoppers returning toward the West Virginia mines. This route is characterized by the route’s major grades appearing in succession, testing the player’s ability to manage momentum over a long distance. Additionally, the Empties to Austen scenario features rare B&O Baldwin RF16 “Sharknose” diesels. In this scenario, players take empty coal hoppers from Grafton Yard toward the Austen Spur and Austen Mine, offering a chance to operate less common locomotive types within the B&O fleet.
Historical Context and Route Details
The Baltimore & Ohio’s mountain main line between Cumberland and Grafton was historically known as the “West End.” Opened in 1852, it was the B&O’s original main line crossing of the Alleghany Mountains and became one of America’s most demanding heavy-haul railroads. The simulation route captures this history by including the sprawling Cumberland Terminal and portions of adjoining B&O lines. The territory is defined by steep and twisting mountain grades, which remain a defining challenge for crews in the simulation.
Western Maryland Railway fans are also represented in the pack, with scenarios that traverse the Thomas Subdivision. This inclusion ensures that the content appeals to users interested in both the B&O and the WM, reflecting the interconnected nature of the region’s rail network. The release of Scenario Pack 02 provides a substantial addition to the Train Simulator Classic library, offering detailed operational challenges and historical authenticity for users who prioritize realistic heavy-haul simulation.
